 A survey reported in 1967 of midwestern librarians (37 men, 408 women, total 445) in small public libraries (i.e., serving populations of 10,000 to 35,000) showed thatthe median age was 50.3 years. Years worked in libraries ranged from 1 to 44, with the average being 14.9 years.               (Source)

 A 1983 survey of a systematic sample of school library media centers concerning data for fiscal year 1982-83 (survey size: 2,000 centers; responding: 1,297; usable: 1,251 or 62%) showed thatthe average years of experience and salary for library media specialists by type of library was as follows:

                 elementary school (587 schools): 10.04 years of experience with a salary of $19,596;

                 junior high/middle school (308 schools): 11.79 years of experience with a salary of $21,613;

                 senior high school (304 schools): 12.02 years of experience with a salary of $20,069;

                 other (49 schools): 9.84 years of experience with a salary of $15,954.                 (Source)
